Contrary to what some folks say about the difficulty of this book,
in my opinion, it is not that difficult and if you are seriously wanting to learn to speak Thai, then this is the book to purchase. It is not as difficult as some commentators make it out to be. There may be some easier to use
books on the market which were designed so that the casual tourist can quickly get some phrases together. If you want "Kids Stuff" then get the easy to use books and suffer.
If you want to learn the Thai language well, then this is it.
I have personally used this text and found that it was the best Thai language instruction book that I have ever used.
This book is not the typical Thai phrase book commonly found in Travel book stores. This book is the same one that is used by the U.S. State Department in order to train U.S. diplomats to speak the Thai language.
The FSI Thai Basic Course starts out with simple words and verbs and basic sentences. There
are drills and sentence construction exercises which clues you in to how the Thai language can be used to construct more varied and complex sentences. The lessons in the FSI Thai Basic Course are designed build your Thai language skills as opposed to the "hit and miss" and "trial
and error" and "abstract" formats that many of the Thai language books for tourists. I you would like to learn to speak Thai and be able to command a knowledge of the Thai language beyond "excuse me, where is the restroom" then Buy This Book!
These books are designed to be used in individual and group lessons and also self instruction.
There are audio tapes available. The tapes are co-ordinated with the lessons in the books. I recommend the tapes in order to be able to practice and to check your pronounciation and
also to train your ear to the Thai language and also to ree your abilities through drills.
